Decoding Iceland saw the light of day after over 10 years in production. Appropriately, it took place at Riff, the Reykjavik International Film Festival, which didn’t even exist when filming began in summer 1999.

Director H.A. Arnarson(R) and Thráinn Bertelsson(L), who appears in the film. In 2009, Thráinn became one of Iceland’s new parliamentarians, or as we say “Althingismadur.”

A lot of key people were there, including many Icelandic friends and family. It was something else to finally see the project on the big screen in front of an enthusiastic audience. Overall, I was extremely happy with the response.

The first screening immediately resulted in some international press attention. Two German journalists found the film fascinating, and from the looks of it, I’ll be appearing in the official publication of the German Railway System. Meanwhile, there’s interest in the film from a Canadian publication, and an Italian journalist referred to Decoding Iceland in an interview on Icelandic state radio. All this from a single screening!

But it was short and sweet. We only had time for one screening out of three, and after four whirlwind days in Iceland it was time to get back to business in L.A. Coming up: More festival submissions, and more clips from Decoding Iceland. Stay Tuned!

Decoding Iceland offers a time-lapse look at Iceland’s wild ride through the last decades, and how it fits patterns of an 1100-year history. The film follows the rise and fall of a genetics company, the government that enabled it, and the culture that brought about that government. In the 1990s Decode Genetics arrived, claiming it would find [...]
